Spain
SO CLOSE, YET SO DIFFERENT

For some reason, I had never visited Spain. Well, once in my teens, when I went on a summer holiday to Salou. But that doesn’t count.
When I finally did visit for real, it felt like a real discovery. It’s similar to its neighbours, but still so different. People look their best at all times, especially the older generation. There’s cute little stores everywhere. And the best thing is the markets, where you can eat yourself into a food coma for next to nothing.
One of the great highlights is Extremadura, an area about 3 hours from Madrid that has some of the most bewildering vistas i’ve seen in Europe. The Romans used to retire in this area (I can imagine why), so the villages around here are filled with ancient ruins.
I’m glad I gave Spain a second chance.
